Char Rooftop Bar review: unobstructed panorama view, tropical sensations

Char rooftop bar Bangkok

By June 2022 CHAR Rooftop Bar commemorates its six years anniversary, based on level 26 as the rooftop of the favoured boutique Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road (which also boasts a panorama city view infinite pool).

Its light bites and cocktails – we can conclude from this visit – are among the best in town, and being situated on Wireless Road gives it a direct benefit – aside from being close to a skytrain station – in that it boasts an unobstructed city panorama view in sunset direction, much thanks to the land on the opposite side of this road belonging to a large low-rise embassy.

The hotel describes this as a “bustling neighbourhood full of character, long known as the home for most diplomatic missions in Thailand, Wireless Road is now replete with marvellous culinary finds, trendy shopping spots, tree-lined avenues, and so much more for visitors to explore – all with Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road at its heart, offering amazing views at every floor.”

At the rooftop bar a glass partition safety wall gives great views for guests also sitting down near to it. Further back, nearer to the bar, seats and tables are on a slightly higher level for the sake of good views also from there.

The furniture consists in both high and low tables, with rattan armchairs, sofas and also low round seats. The sitting zone closer to the bar counter also has an automatic canvas that can cover this area from the elements.

In a seating section besides the bar on also finds a wall mural depicting a singer, saxophonist and pianist.

The overall setting is, like the hotel itself, ‘boutique’ and cosy.

Char Rooftop Bar has been part of setting trends for Thailand’s cocktail culture since it opened, where its Thai bartenders are doing a really good job in terms of presenting appealing and well composed cocktail concoctions.

Among the selection of the delicious signature cocktails with tropical touches we try ‘Gin Basil Smash’, ‘Whiskey Groove’ and ‘Touching the Clouds’. The smashing gin drink is with Gin Tanqueray and has a nice lime/apple flavour. Thumbs up! The groovy and smokey whiskey-based drink is made with Black Label, Amaretto, mango rice syrup. Touching The Clouds has Bulleit bourbon as base.

For those who prefer non-alcohol mocktails these (coloured lime, blood red and orange and respectively) are among the choices: ‘Hypnotic Raspberry’; ‘Delicate Lychee Sensation’, which gives a super fresh tropical sensation; and ‘Spiced Passiflora’, with its “crispy”, crushed ice surface with a slice of passion fruit! And there is no denying that the tropical lychee fruit works very well in drinks!

And the light bites that goes with the drinks do not disappoint, especially not anyone who fancy Mediterranean food, as we do. Recommended: Italian cold cut selection, and the more Asian-oriented Jumbo crab cake croquettes.

In conclusion CHAR Rooftop Bar should be preferred choice in downtown Bangkok when it comes to a night out, be it as a warm-up place during sunset or as a later night waterhole. It is the perfect place to showcase Bangkok’s rooftop bar scene which deservedly is such an attraction both for residents and visitors. And the setting paired and the creative and very refreshing cocktails: a perfect a combo indeed!
