The 273 suite-room Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit belongs to the new breed of the metropolitan’s hotel selection, ranking in the more exclusive portfolio (also with multiple sister properties from the brand in the same town) while feeling less formal and more laidback in style.

Both modern business travellers and in-the-know shoppers will find this to be an undeniably great base for any work or exploring the city. Its location is at close distance to downtown’s offices and increasing selection of shopping malls, and with direct access from one skytrain station. The airport link train is also just a few stations away (either via the skytrain or the metro).

Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit’s Thai art interpretations

The predominantly glass façade of the hotel has been designed with a contrasting feminine touch – a pleat that represents pleats in fabric. Unusual for downtown Bangkok a lush mini park, with a water feature, is also facing the street in front of the hotel entrance – welcoming guests into a contrasting, calming environment in an otherwise chaotic city.

Inside, they are greeted with a perfect blend of cultural heritage and modern vibe (aimed at being a contemporary Thai dwelling). The hotel designers have come up with something natural (including earth tones and several elements) and with interesting interpretations of Thai art and culture.

Homey, understated and warming are suitable descriptions for the residential-vibe lobby, where there are some truly intriguing design items. The lobby’s reception desk, for instance, was, in two ways, inspired by the Buddha. Not only is there a gold gradient from top to bottom but it’s made up of handmade gold leaf panels that are influenced by the tradition of placing gold leaf panels onto a Buddha statue to honour his teachings. This gold gradient (closer to a rose gold, copper ) has also been applied throughout the hotel. The panels that separate the co-working/informal meeting room space from the seating area, are also handmade using weaved copper.

Placed in the centre, on the white sand marble floor, is the gold-hued Thai art piece ‘A couple in love 2’; a love-themed sculpture depicting a warm embrace. The second sculpture is on the meeting floor.

In the Lobby Lounge zone (as well as in the ceiling) the marble floor is more cappuccino-veined, flanked by pierced fret work designs on dark timber (found on the ventilation panels of Traditional Thai houses). This social space offer light meals, snacks and beverages, including signature herbal drinks while guests can socialize with friends, conduct business meetings or get work done in comfort (in semi-circle beige armchairs and sofas).

Additional black floor-to-ceiling wood panels with shiny inlay metal contrasts the otherwise bright lobby, conveying and enhancing its living room character. The custom-made ceiling and wall lamps, formed as tubes with transparent warm LED bulb filaments, bring the same effect.

For each of the first six floors there is also uniquely sourced artwork by different Thai artists.

The hotel has also not gone unnoticed for its ‘Spectrum Lounge & Bar’. Perched on level 29-30 Spectrum features a large and spectacular open-air go-to-venue, featuring an elevated Disc Jockey booth, and cabanas with trees and ample seating choices for guests – all enclosed by high tilted side walls. There is a cosy feel, with comfy, upholstered rattan sofas and chairs.

Spectrum is a perfect sundowners’ cocktail setting, as well as a late-night party venue.

Also, level 29 boasts outdoor seating, and its indoor setting features an open kitchen, with a marble clad interior: geometrically laid black-white-grey veined marble. Its bar and dining room comes with a bright-beige, incredibly stylish geometric latticework in its ceiling, paired with design furniture; including leather bar stools and brown wooden details.

This rooftop attraction provides an ideal vantage point for watching the pulse of the city. Among its cocktails is the scotch-based signature Hole-In-One. Covid-19 has also inspired the menu, with: Anti-19 (Ketel One vodka, Falernum, lime and Angostura bitter) and New Normal (Ketel One vodka, Mazane peach bitter and lime).

Some other gin drinks are: Rose de Gin (Hendrick’s gin, lychee juice, lime and pomegranate) and Indian Sea (Roku gin, lemon juice, lemon bitter and Blue Curacao). There is also a 2 hours free flow package with sparkling, white and red wine, plus local beer.

The Riddle Brut, Sauvignon Blanc and Carbernet/Merlot – all from Hardy’s Australia – and a Pinot noir from Robert Mondavi Private Selection are served. There are also imported beers and mocktails on the menu.

Among the tempting food bites and meals are: Italian cold cuts selection; Marinated olives; Crispy calamari with avocado chili mayo; Snow crab salad (with celeriac, cucumber micro herbs, truffle mayonnaise); Grilled tiger prawn with garlic butter, citrus salad; Grilled king Tasmania salmon; Spaghetti Puttanesca (olive, caper, garlic, anchovy, tomato sauce) etc.

Cook-to-order breakfast buffet

The food theme continues by heading to Market Café and Market Café by Khao, where a sumptuous breakfast is served, mainly from a cook-to-order menu. Organic eggs are prepared to your liking; omelette, poached, Benedict or Florentine. There are also signatures: Mussamun omelette (organic egg, chicken, shallot, potato, Mussamun curry); Truffle scramble (scrambled egg, Mascarpone, truffle oil) or the Egg & tomato (fried egg, tomato sauce, basil.

From the grill smoked ham, pork/chicken skewer, grilled sweet potato, roast tomato, sautéed mushroom and grilled bell pepper are among the many items. There are also noodle dishes such as Wok fried flat noodle with black soy sauce and pork or chicken; Fried rice; Pancake or waffle with your choice of topping; Toasted open croissant with your choice of topping etc.

From the cold kitchen: smoked salmon with dill mustard sauce, cold cut and a selection of cheese.

There are also healthy signature choices: Wellbeing bowl (rocket, corn, baby cos, bell pepper, champignon mushroom, pomegranate with your choice of dressing); the picture-perfect Quinoa salad (quinoa, pumpkin seed, cucumber, mint, lime, avocado, red radish); or Oatmeal & banana bowl (overnight oats, caramelized banana, coconut blueberries, sesame). Freshly pressed juices include the absolutely awesome passion fruit juice. Beetroot, cantaloupe, watermelon and guava are other juices.

Market Café also serves an All-you-can-eat river prawn & crab lunch. Then, open for dining only the white-tablecloth Market Café by Khao (a partnership with Michelin-starred, award-winning and iconic ‘Khao restaurants’) showcases the “representation, interpretation, and imagination of Thai cuisine from traditional to urban environments”, e.g. modern Thai fine dining. Market Café by Khao uses time-tested traditional cooking methods blended with creativity and excellence.

Also here the use of marble is prominent: black-grey veined marble for the open kitchen counters and black-white for the dinner tables. The living room-style character is accented by wine red and grey armchairs, beige sofas that run the length of wooden lattice partitions or bookshelves. These bookshelves are filled with blue-white china, copper coffee pots and vases, and wooden rabbits! The rabbits actually turn out to be a traditional tool used for grating coconuts and are still used in some Thai provinces! Behind the shelves are walls of either the rose gold/copper mirror panels or framed antique glass windows, which give a bespoke feeling to the setting.

After a lengthy breakfast, or perhaps that all-one-can-eat lunch, it’s deservedly time to relax, and also keep one’s fitness at the outdoor pool and gym. The lap pool comes with blue mosaic tiles, enclosed by lots of lush greenery including plants and trees. There are cushy padded daybeds and grey sofa beds seating two people. The big gym comes with the very latest cardio equipment from Life Fitness and the spa/gym locker room comes with an impressive design consisting in – you guessed it – sandy marble… plus framed mirrors, blond wood curved walls, and panels with that vintage textured rose-gold copper.

Regency Club rewards

As the afternoon passes by with relaxation and exercise, time arrives for the reward for guests who have access to the Regency Club and its pre-dinner canapés and cocktails, from 5.30 pm onwards.

This handsome space is done up in shades of light brown and rose-gold – here with the copper panels dominating on partition walls, combined with wooden floors and ceiling. And lots of the copper-glass lamp tubes are mounted on walls and in the ceiling. The furniture consists in sandy-hued rattan armchairs, design sofas, stylish pillows and veined black and creamy white-beige marble tables.

One large timber slab is laid with food and drinks, where one can mix a Caesar salad. Sumptuous wines are served: Ruber, Cabernet Sauvignon, La Carraia; Alma de Chile, Sauvignon Blanc; and Prosecco, Hardy’s The Riddle. Dishes cooked à la minute are: Sukiyaki seafood, BBQ pork bun, Fusilli salmon sink sauce, or Tuna melt.

Regency Club of course also serves breakfast as well as snacks and refreshments throughout the day.

To round up the food topic there is also in-room dining which includes Indian cuisine: Kadai paneer, saffron rice; Dal makhani, rich tomato gravy, naan bread; Butter chicken, steam rice etc.

Then there is Thai cuisine, with Spicy pomelo salad (a must if you haven’t tried it); the classic Tom yum goong, Spring rolls etc. For soups and salads find Mushroom soup, Caesar salad among the choices. There are also Smoked salmon bagel, and Grilled ham & cheese sandwich, pasta dishes as well as main courses such as Grilled Australian sirloin steak or Roasted fish of the day. For dessert some classics in the form of the local Mango sticky rice and cheese cake.

Celebrate together with Val d’Oca Prosecco Blu Millesimato Extra Brut and choices of white and red wine for the meals, including Miles from Nowhere, Chardonnay, Margaret River, Australia; or Henri Delagrange Hautes-Cotes de Beaune, Pinot Noir, Burguny.

Design and finesse

And so, last but not least we have come to the rooms and suites, where the sophistication in the design will not disappoint any guests – here describing the ‘Club Deluxe’ in detail.

Both outside the entrance and bedside there is crystal shaft lighting, resembling a towering building, which is pleat-like with angles intended to reflect the exterior of the hotel.

The door has a beautiful veneer wood panel, and the same goes for the bathroom and closet slide doors, the cabinet with mini bar plus the wall panels to the left and right of the bed. There is a sit-down bench inside by the door and a floor-to-ceiling mirror next to the walk-in closet.

The design is awash in earth tones: beige, light brown, grey, and black, featuring a beautiful beige carpet with floral petals motif and brown black-out curtains.

The sandy-hued, copiously marbled bathroom has been finessed with a freestanding bath and a city view through floor-to-ceiling windows, a vanity including a large mirror, plus a separate glass-enclosed rain shower. There is even a separate air-condition installed. Toiletries are from the Portico brand; natural bodycare made with aloe vera.

The Residential-style room also comes with an upholstered corner sofa in shades of beige and creamy white, with sofa cushions in luxurious fabrics and low, round black marble tables and a fruit basket on top. At the foot of the bed is yet another round black marble table with two creamy brown/grey armchairs – more suitable for dining or doing laptop work.

The nod to local heritage is found also here, in the form of an intriguing pattern, of wallpaper in the bedroom and as glazed printed panel in the bathroom. It is a traditional Thai textile pattern, whose depicted flowers turn out to be inspired by one of the Thai queen’s traditional dresses – adding some feminine touch to an otherwise quite contemporary and masculine room.

There is also artisanal tea from the local brand Chaidim with Northern Thailand green tea for mornings and relaxing afternoons, or chamomile – sweet dreams and pretty flowers – as soothing evening drink.

A fabulous mattress with feather-soft pillows and duvet ensures a good night’s sleep. What else is there to yearn for!?
