For the modern traveller, be it business or leisure, the new Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel (on soi 24 in a high-rise building housing also an Accor sister, ibis hotel) is a commendable choice – for its fabulous location, its design with colourful and comfy rooms, and also its amenities, combined.
Exercising in the gym, swimming laps in the pool, or working on the lap top al fresco – all on the rooftop level – are part of what’s on offer. The rooftop also offers its evening bar, with an extensive drinks list paired with food, while the ground floor comes with the all-day ‘Deli And Bar’ and also a co-working space!
Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel Modern aesthetic
Overall, this Mercure has been designed with a nod to a young and fresh aesthetic, where its concept with modern décor is inspired by the fashionable EM District (The Emporium and EM Quartier fashion, retail stores and F&B destinations are situated just steps from the hotel, along with a skytrain BTS station at the mouth of the ‘soi’ cross-street ‘Sukhumvit 24’). Part of what has inspired the hotel’s interior designers is also the tailoring room concept; thus antique Singer sewing machines are on display in the lobby, and sewing thread rolls are part of the interior décor in the deluxe suites.
The hotel building is a bit away from the street, with a park front with private drive-up entrance (you may find a beer garden set up on its lawn too!). Right inside the glass doors (with separate entry for ibis) there is a concierge desk on the right and the deli with bar and bar stools to the left. Wine glasses are hung upside down over the counter and fresh bakery and sandwiches in display cases are ready to be served or as grab-and-go food.
There are tables where to sit down for work or meetings and have some drinks and food from the deli; perhaps a glass of wine after work or a day of exploring downtown!? There are carrot cake, strawberry tart, apple Pie, butter croissant and pain au chocolate croissant etc. to go with your choice of coffee or tea.
Further inside the foyer, with its eye-catching décor and cosiness, is the very cool check-in desk, consisting in a counter mounted on tree oval metal foundations. Above it hangs an artistic ceiling lamp, while opposite the reception one finds designer orange armchairs and grey sofas. The next section of the foyer is a lobby lounge which includes one long table with bar stools and six round globe light bulbs hung from above. Inlaid geometric patterned marble flooring, frosted glass partition walls, a veined white marble table and light brown wooden details bring further sophistication to the interior.
A bright and warm-coloured co-working space, adding to this hotel’s attraction, is situated nearby the foyer, in a separate room. It offers a variety of seating – open for all guests and drop-in use to take care of work in comfort.
Vibrant rooms at Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel
Moving up to the accommodation floors one encounters thick, vibrant carpets in the corridors as well as the rooms; lively with splashes of purple, dark wine red, yellow, grey blue and peach.
Situated on the upper floors the hotel’s superior, deluxe and deluxe suites offer indulgent bedding (very comfy mattress) and a warm colour scheme. The superior and deluxe room types come with a foyer that includes a brass/gold metal feature as framing around luggage shelf. The bedroom is accented by one mustard yellow chair and one wine red designer armchair with leg support, and the wall behind the bed painted purple.
The window curtain, as well as the padded-leathered, diagonal-lined headboard comes in hues of cappuccino brown. One white ceiling lamp has the shape of an oversized French macaron.
The glass-partitioned bathroom comes with a walk-in rain shower and roller blind, and black, grey and yellow-tiled walls.
Deluxe rooms are equipped with an espresso machine and high quality Segafredo coffee capsules, bathrobe, slippers and extra amenities. The Deluxe Suite, meanwhile, is more spacious at 45 sq.m., with an ensuite bathroom and with additional furniture consisting in an orange-red chaise lounge at the foot of the bed and a marble living room table. A wooden wall behind the bed, with diagonal crossing bright metal strips and dark-brown fitted wood planks further enhances the design.
It’s a stylish room design with very appealing colours, perfect for those combining work and play in comfort during a Bangkok stay.
Rooftop pool, bar, happy hour
The Vue Bar Rooftop Restaurant basically doubles as pool bar and rooftop venue, integrated with a lap pool. At night this setting, including a frangipani pink flower tree and bar, bar tables and table seating, transforms into a low-lit, vibrant spot, with arresting views over the Bangkok skyline.
Starting at 7 pm there is a ‘buy 1 get 1 free’ during one hour, and alternatively free flow unlimited cocktails, draft beer, house wine by glass for 1 hour, including canapés at 699 baht net (on certain days).
Some daring cocktails are on the menu, including ‘Tropical Slap’ (with vodka, passion fruit syrup, passion fruit, lime and topped with red wine) and ‘We Will Rock You’ (with Roselle Sierra infused gin, tipper, strawberry syrup, roselle juice, lime, egg whites and topped with strawberry). Cha-Chai, Lemongrass Pina Colada, Bo Klua Romance are the other signature cocktails – all with elements of tropical Thailand in the ingredients.
The bar menu at the breezy rooftop affair includes: Beef & cheese quesadillas (with spicy dip and sour cream), Chorizo & cheese potato croquettes (with tomato-paprika sauce), New Zealand mussels (roasted with smoky bacon & garlic crumbs), Pizza boat with salami and Cold cut & cheese platter (salami, chorizo, brie and emmental cheese, olives, pickles, cantaloupe and bread).
Those croquettes and the pizza boat are awesome temptations!
For dessert, opt for Lemon cheese mousse, Coconut crème brulee served with coconut chips and sweet meringue, or Swiss chocolate mousse filled with raspberry jelly on roasted almond crumble.
Wine – ‘Flavours from the cellar’ selected by Mercure include: Sartori Erfo Spumante Brut Doc, Italy; Sartori, Pinot Grigio; Georges Duboeuf, Syrah Pays d’Oc Rosé; and Pinical Estate, Cabernet Merlot of Australia.
Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel all-day dining
Finally the Market Restaurant is where to head for the breakfast buffet; an outlet with ample space for guests to spread out and dig in to the various food stations. There is also a variety of seating in several sections with partition walls, including semi-circle grey or purple sofas plus grey, purple, wine red, mustard yellow and mint green armchairs and chairs.
There are some vintage-inspired décor items, combined with traditional Thai handicraft, such as countryside round hand-woven birch-bark food trays – here hung from the ceiling at different levels, above an intriguingly patterned floral black-white symmetric marble floor section.
Transparent glass lamps with silver metal fittings, as well as fire light bulbs, are hung from the ceiling. A homey feel is further enhanced by antique-styled wallpaper and tiles with floral motif, and book shelves (with integrated counters for the serving of the dumplings and soup sections).
Circle shapes are a reoccurring motif in the ceilings and interiors of the hotel – so also in the restaurant where there are such large circles hung near the mirror ceiling.
The breakfast offers a decent selection of western and Asian dishes, basically cooked à la minute, and that vary from day to day. Among the hot dishes there is ginger soup, stir-fried kale with bacon, pork spare ribs soup with white radish, stir-fried noodles seafood with black sauce, Spaghetti ‘Kee Mao’ etc. Then there are also Danish pastries, gouda and emmantal cheese, bread pudding with vanilla sauce, fruit salad, French toast etc. And don’t miss the detox drink bael juice – it reduces heat and thirst from the body – things one tend to suffer from when in Bangkok, and where Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit 24 hotel is a welcome respite from it all…
