Eco-tourism Phuket: Do you dream of discovering a different side of one of Thailand’s foremost tourist islands? Idyllic Phuket attracts visitors from around the world to relax on its sandy beaches, be thrilled by its exciting attractions and revel in its vibrant nightlife. For many travellers however, it is becoming increasingly difficult to experience the “real” Phuket – the original tropical jewel that first enchanted global explorers with its natural and cultural wonders.

Now, one new resort is giving its thoughtful guests the chance to uncover the authentic charm of the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’. Le Méridien Phuket Mai Khao Beach Resort, which opened its doors in September 2023, is a haven of tranquility that is committed to showcasing the timeless essence of Phuket in a highly responsible way.

Set directly on the golden sands of Mai Khao Beach, overlooking the Andaman Sea and surrounded by the natural beauty of Sirinat National Park, this elegant, low-rise resort is woven seamlessly into its surroundings. This coastal paradise is home to an amazing array of native wildlife. The forests bloom with native trees and flowers, while the lush mangroves, turquoise seas and coral reefs teem with life. Arguably the most charming residents of Mai Khao Beach however, are the sea turtles, and visitors have the unique opportunity to encounter nesting adults and hatchlings all-year round.

Mai Khao Beach also sets the stage for energising activities such as yoga, as well as non-motorised water sports like paddle-boarding and kayaking. Alternatively, guests can simply stroll along the soft sand, splash in the shallow sea, or sit in the shade of casuarina trees and soak up the serene ambience – this secluded stretch of Phuket’s sunset coast feels a million miles away from the busy tourist resorts further south.

Le Méridien Phuket Mai Khao Beach Resort enhances this sense of tranquility. Woven into the landscape with no high-rise buildings, this elegant seafront retreat is highly sustainable. The entire resort is single-use plastic-free and has adopted paperless operations, it generates its own power using rooftop solar panels, and wastewater is treated (without chemicals) and used to water the gardens. Recycled ocean waste is crafted into serving trays and beach bags, while bamboo and coconut shells are used in the resort’s structure and design, and local artists have adorned the rooms with traditional patterns.

One key aspect of the resort’s sustainability policy is its F&B sourcing. Executive Chef Apisit (“Bomb”) Chaichana, who was born and raised in the Mai Khao area, has developed a network of like-minded suppliers who share his passion for the environment. This focus on local and seasonal ingredients not only creates original dining experiences; it also helps to support Phuket’s farmers and reduces the carbon emissions associated with transporting goods long distances. Two of Chef Bomb’s signature dishes that will give diners a true taste of Mai Khao Beach are phad pak rin han, which showcases the unique flavour of a native species of sea grass, and Phuket Lobster Sunrise, which uses fresh, locally-caught Phuket lobsters.

“At Le Méridien Phuket Mai Khao Beach Resort, we understand that we have a responsibility to protect and preserve our destination. Stretching along the northwest shore of Phuket, between the pristine national park and sparkling sea, Mai Khao Beach is a natural paradise that stimulates the senses and inspires the imagination. For curious explorers who crave authentic experiences, this unspoiled coastal landscape is the perfect place to discover a different side of Phuket,” said GM Ms. Jirarat Ninpadub.
